Creating a colorful, Brooklyn space for a creative couple who both work and entertain at home was the challenge in this rental, garden apartment. I worked with some furnishings they had and added to their bohemian style with creative ideas like upcycling his retired surfboard into a ceiling light fixture in the hallway and using an old champagne riddling rack as a conversation piece in the dining area. To hide a dated kitchen, I built an organic, uplit, windowbox screen from willow branches that would provide a focal point in the dining area after dark but would not block the available light during the day. Custom pillows and curtains were used to add more color and the latter temporarily replaces pesky closet folding doors in the office. (Chris Johnson Pictures)
